The third largest denomination in New Zealand, the Presbyterian Church, has elected a Tokelauan-Samoan minister as its new leader for the next two years.

Reverend Taimoanaifakaofo Kaio is minister at Onehunga Cooperating Parish in Auckland.

His new role as Moderator gives him the responsibility of chairing the church's general assembly, which will include representatives and leaders from all the Presbyterian churches across the country.

Reverend Fakaofo says he's honoured to be the first Pacific Island minister to take on the role.

"It's the decision of the whole Presbyterian church so it humbles me to realise it's not a part of the church that's calling me, it's the whole church, so as a Pacific Islander I feel I better step up for the Pacific Islands but also for myself and my family."

Reverend Fakaofo (named after the Tokelauan atoll) is the son of Samoan missionaries who served in Tokelau.

He says is it now his mission as moderator, to encourage the church to work together and go forward as one church with many ethnic groups and languages.
