New Zealand has come out ahead of Australia in generosity as an international development donor for the first time in 13 years.

The latest global rankings on developed countries who give a helping hand have put Sweden at the top of the 2017 OECD list.

New Zealand is 18th, ahead of Japan and Australia.

The last time it gave more development funding than its larger neighbour was in 2005.

The OECD recommends richer countries aim to give one per cent of their gross national income to help the developing world.

Only three developed countries - Sweden, Luxembourg and Norway - have hit that mark, or narrowly missed it for the 2017 report.

But Australia, a leading development partner in the Pacific, has hit an all-time low in the annual rankings.
