The Cook Islands is to resume measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations today, following a suspension of the program after the deaths of two babies in Samoa.

The babies died within hours of each other, after they were injected with the MMR vaccine.

A joint investigation by the Samoan Government and United Nations Children's Fund, the purchasing body for the vaccines, is ongoing.

Cook Islands Secretary of Health, Dr Josephine Herman, says more information had been received late last night confirming both countries use different dosage vials for their vaccines.

She says given this new information she's green-lit resuming the vaccination programme.

The Cook Islands has one of the world's highest vaccination rates, and Dr Herman says she's seen for herself the life-saving benefits of the programme.
