Niue's state-of-the-art museum could see the return of long lost heirlooms and heritage items stored in overseas institutions.
Construction of the new Tāoga Niue, expected to be completed in July next year, will house the museum, archives, a library, performing arts space and outdoor concert area.
Director Moira Enetama says there's been a lot of interest in donating or lending Niuean treasures for the Tāoga Niue when it opens.
"We're in discussion with Auckland Museum and Te Papa. There is some interest also from the Victoria Museum in Australia," she says. "We have an anthropologist who came here a couple of years back from Germany. She's interested to discuss the collection held there."
